The grand prize trip will send a lucky guest to see the Seahawks play in London. To get ready for your next trip, our travel enthusiast, Mary, is here to give us some little packing hacks. Hi, I’m Mary. I work on the digital marketing team here and we are preparing for the Great American Road Trip this August and I don’t know about you, but packing gives me such a headache so I have found all the packing hacks to add more ease to traveling. One issue I always have with packing is that I either over pack or under pack so a good general rule to follow is that for every one pair of bottoms that you pack, pack two tops. One tip I have for packing is to roll your clothes. This is a great way to maximize your space in your suitcase. So how I roll my clothes is that I fold them in half and then you just want to roll as tight as you can. So pants can be a little bit trickier sometimes, but you still follow the same general rules. You’re just going to want to fold it in half and then maybe start from the bottom and make your way to the top. Ta-da! Another tricky one is shirts that have hoods and sweaters that have hoods, so I always like to tuck my hood down first, put long sleeves behind and roll from here. Another tip I have is to always make sure that all of your jeans are zipped up and buttoned or your sweatshirts are zipped up before you start packing. It just makes it a lot easier to do the folding. Perfect-o! Another tip I have is to put your toiletries or makeup in a clear or semi-clear bag. I like to use this bag when I travel because it is semi-see-through so I can see what’s in there without having to dig through the bag. It also has a little bit of bubble wrap in the packaging so it keeps all my stuff secure. I got this bag from one of my favorite makeup brands, but you can probably find something similar in grocery stores. What’s safer than a lock? A sock! One hassle of packing is always worrying about your breakables that you want to bring with you. One way to keep those safe is to put anything that you think might break or get hit by something into a sock. We walk around in our shoes all day and they get all gross and muddy from all of our different adventures and we don’t want any of that to get on our clothes so one cheap way to keep your clothes protected is to put your shoes in a plastic bag. Just shove them right in. This keeps your clothes protected from any dirt you may have picked up on your fun adventures. One thing to keep in mind with packing your suitcase is that it’s not all about the folding, it’s actually about where you put things in your suitcase as well. So you want to put all of your heavier items like your shoes or any electrics towards the bottom near the wheels so that way when you lift up the suitcase there’s no shift in weight. So another tip that I have is to stack your hats on top of each other like this. This helps the bill keep it’s form and if you have more space on the top you can just fit them right in there and that doesn’t put too much pressure on your hat. Since the main goal is maximizing space, anytime that you can you can shove little pieces into your shoes even. This will also add extra protection to any of your breakable items. Another really great hack is putting any loose wires into a sunglass case. We’re going to fold each of these up so they don’t get tangled in each other first. You want to make sure that with your phone cords you don’t do this too tight or else it’s going to ruin that connection right there. You can also use some tape to help secure your wires together so they don’t come loose while they’re in the case. That’s all the packing hacks I have for you guys today. Be sure to use these the next time you guys go on vacation and join us every Monday in August for the Great American Road Trip. Thank you Mary for those awesome packing hacks. Summer is also the perfect time to get outside and be active. One of the great perks of working at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge is all of the amazing health and workout challenges that team members can participate in. Each year team members, like me, participate in the Tough Mudder, complete walkabout challenges and work out in the fitness center to win prizes. A group of team members also run in Ragnar, a 199-mile relay that starts in Blaine and ends in Langley. Lisa met with some of our runners from the Swinomish Ragnar team to see how it went. Let’s check it out. Hey guys we’re here in the workout room over by the lodge with some of our team members from the Swinomish Casino & Lodge. These guys participated in Ragnar this July. Can you, Josh, tell us a little bit more about Ragnar? Sure. So Ragnar was a great experience for all of us. We had to make our way across a 200-ish mile distance race between everyone and rack up as many kills as we possibly could. We had a great time. So can you expand on that term kill, because those of us who don’t do Ragnar don’t really know what that means. Kills means when you’re racing an opponent you want to make sure you pass them. So it’s just if you pass a team member or pass someone that you’re participating with? That’s correct. Gotcha. Okay so this next question is for Greg. Greg, how many years has Swinomish Casino & Lodge participated? This last year marked our fourth year, consecutive year of the doing the Ragnar relay and each year we’ve gotten more people involved. The first year I think we only had enough people to have six so we had to join another team to do it. The next year I think we had seven or eight and now this last year everyone that was in the vans, all 12 people, were all either Swinomish Casino employees or Swinomish Tribal employees. Wonderful. Wow. My next question is for Josh. When you’re running that last five mile, maybe you’ve already run 15, you’ve got five more to go, what’s going through your head? So what’s going through my head is that I want to make sure I set the pace for the rest of my teammates and hopefully I hand the baton over correctly because there’s times where you’re just so dead tired that you end up dropping the wrist band and yeah it sets your team just a couple seconds back, but most importantly you just want to make sure you be like ‘hey, go get ‘em champ.’ So motivating. I might do it in two years. So you guys seem like you’re in really good shape, but what do you do to prepare for this huge event? Jorge, how do you train? We train all around here in Skagit Valley running, doing stairs over here at the casino, cardio over here on the machines in the gym and that’s it. Well we really have no excuses over here at the Swinomish Casino & Lodge because as you can see there’s some awesome equipment here. Like Jorge said, we can do the stairs. So we’re here in our fitness center, which has really made it easy for our team to come in and get in shape and join these events as a team. Okay Greg, I am going to pass the mic over to you and you can tell us a little bit more about where we are standing. You got it. Well we’re in our fitness center that’s utilized primarily for our guests to use, but as time went by we realized it was an opportunity for us to put together our wellness program and start using it for workouts for our team members. We started setting up workout times. We came up with a lot of the programs we have with our wellness team: stair challenge, fitness challenges, all the fun things we do to get everyone involved and right now the room that we’re in is close to not being used anymore by our team members because we’re going to build a new fitness room up in the new area that we’ve remodeled and built over above the new entrances. So soon, hopefully sometime in the month of September, we’ll have a new crossfit rig up there, we’ll have an area for everyone to come up and do their aerobic activities, which Brenda is working on, and then as well we’ll have places for people to work out. We’ve got showers for the guys, showers for the girls, the whole thing. So we’re really hoping to turn the whole wellness movement within the casino here to another level here within the next couple months so keep your eyes open. Lots of fun stuff coming. Swin Fit is going to rock it this next year and hopefully we’ll have a Ragnar team next year that’s going to go ahead and improve our time by what, how much time do you think we can improve- take off our time from this year? Probably about 30, maybe up to an hour. I think so. I think we’re going to do really well next year. Jorge, what do you think? [Laughter] Jorge is not a man of many words, but I can tell you that he’s probably thinking that we’d at least shave off 15 or 20 minutes off of our time. Just as this young man, Josh, did. Lisa, here you go. Well thanks guys for sharing your story today and we look forward to your next Ragnar event. When would that be? July, 2019. So I have hope is what you’re telling me. I have hope. Okay. Alright, thanks guys. Next up is the annual Tough Mudder in Seattle. This will be my second year participating and I am really excited to do it again. Participants trek ten miles of muddy terrain while completing 20 obstacles along the way.
